HOLISTIC SIDE OF SPORTS SCIENCE? AT CanAm Interventions

Sports science, what is it you may wonder? Sports science Is the scientific study of physiology, psychology, biomechanics, nutrition, and understanding the social role of sport and exercise in social policy, ethics and philosophy. Sport Scientists are all about understanding how the human body performs under different levels of pressure, whether that’s in elite performance sport or the impact in the general community among children or the elderly.Sport and Exercise Sciences also explore how sport, health and fitness is viewed in society, understanding it through a social scientific and humanistic lens. While some think of the body as a machine that can be conditioned to become stronger and faster, we are also human beings with values, different cultures and deep sociological and psychological experiences.

The philosophy and psychology of health and exercise is applied in order to develop critical thinking across the spectrum of real world issues in health. The social role of sport is examined by asking questions, determining policies, being socially inclusive and getting things right by ethical management.

For over 100 years, scientists have been exploring the link between exercise and mood. As a result, there is an extensive body of research supporting the connection between increased physical activity and improved mental health.

Here are some mental benefits of sports validated by Can-Am Interventions:

  1. Exercise positively impacts levels of serotonin, a chemical that helps regulate mental health, and stimulates the neurotransmitter norepinephrine, which improves mood.
  2. Physical activity releases endorphins, the body’s natural “happy chemicals” and reduces levels of the stress hormone cortisol.
  3. Sports are associated with lower rates of stress, anxiety, depression and suicidal behavior.
  4. Participation in team sports reduces the risk of substance abuse and other reckless behaviors.
  5. Team sports enhance resilience, empathy, confidence and empowerment.
  6. They have also been shown to increase executive functioning, creativity, cognitive development and self-regulation.
  7. Improved teamwork and social responsibility improve substantially.
  8. Better well-being for persons with disabilities.
  9. Team sports, as well as other outdoor activities, get us outside so we can experience the benefits of time in nature.
  10. Sleep improves when we are physically active—which is important because sleep is essential for maintaining mental health.

To Ward Off Anxiety, Get Moving

In addition to protecting us from depression, physical exercise such as team sports has been shown to decrease symptoms of anxiety. Studies have shown that those who were physically active reported higher levels of excitement and enthusiasm as compared to those who were less active. In another study, researchers found that people who got regular vigorous exercise were 25 percent less likely to develop an anxiety disorder.

Long-Term Mental Benefits of Sports

In addition to the immediate mental benefits of sports, playing team sports in high school appears to promote better mental health later in life. A study tested this theory on close to 10,000 participants, about half of whom experienced childhood trauma. They found that individuals with a history of trauma had a significantly lower chance of being diagnosed with depression or anxiety if they had participated in team sports as adolescents.

How do I get involved?

Everybody has their own level of fitness, confidence, capability and desire. Finding a sports hobby, or routine, that works for you is the key. In the beginning it is wise to start small and work your way up. This will ensure that you become successful in your goal. You don’t want to leap in with both feet and then become frustrated or feel defeated when things don’t go as well as you planned. Being able to share the experience can also be beneficial to your cause. Invite a friend or join a group. This will help keep you on track and will bring a sense of comradery. As you become more experienced with your newfound sports hobby, you will be able to expand your view and will achieve at a higher level, thus improving the mental and physical state that you are focused on improving. Can-Am supports natural methods of improving both mental and physical health. We apply this in our lives and we promote it in our clients. If you have a desire to become healthier, both mentally and physically thru sports, and are left with questions or concerns, Can-Am is here to support you. Take the first step and call us today, we look forward to hearing from you!
