SOBRIETY IS THE NEW COOL at CanAm

When we were younger, or just starting to use drugs and/or alcohol, it was likely a fun experience. Our friends and peers around us were all using these substances and it was the accepted “cool” thing to do. As our drug and alcohol use became more and more, it was evident that drugs and alcohol became more of a destructive and harmful force in our life. Drug and alcohol abuse will always evolve into an unmanageable situation. We tend to think that we can return to using drugs and alcohol the way we did when we first started. The nostalgia of the beginning stages of drug and alcohol abuse is what we are chasing but can never achieve. It will never be the way it was. Can-Am would like to bring some awareness to drug and alcohol abuse and some methods on how to treat it.

Signs that you have a problem:

  • Deteriorating health.
  • Loss of focus.
  • Emotional instability.
  • Relationship grievances.
  • A complete collapse of responsibilities.
  • Lack of personal hygiene.
  • Mental health issues.
  • Committing immoral and unlawful acts.

Understanding that you have a problem with drugs and/or alcohol is really the first step. The unmanageability and turmoil of addiction will make it evidently clear that you have a problem. It is then up to you to determine if and how you want to recover from these addictions. There are many avenues of rehabilitation and treatments available.

What are my options for recovery?

  • Detox facility (recommended first step).
  • Intervention (as seen on T.V.)
  • Drug and alcohol treatment facility.
  • Drug and alcohol counselling.
  • 12 step programs such as N.A. (narcotics anonymous) and A.A. (alcoholics anonymous)

Some of, or all, these options are crucial to drug and alcohol recovery. There are many supporting steps to aid these primary steps such as a healthy diet, exercise, healthy hobbies (reading, woodworking, running, playing the piano etc.) and an overall responsible outlook on your life. Being “cool” is absolutely a healthy goal. Being “cool” looks a lot different as a well adjusted, happy and healthy person. Let me tell you that it is also a lot more fun than the unmanageable and unhealthy version of being “cool”. With a clearer and educated outlook on life you will receive the fruits of your labour.

Here just some examples of what to expect when joining the cool club:

  • More focused and confident.
  • Understanding and processing emotions in a healthy manner.
  • Good mental and physical health.
  • Improved relationships.
  • Regaining the passion and desire that drives you.
  • Having time and energy to conduct the many tasks in life.
  • The clarity to be in the present, and the wisdom to overcome obstacles.
