What is the role of an Interventionist?

A Certified Intervention Professional is a highly trained specialist who specializes in substance abuse disorders and other addictions and/or mental health conditions. A certified intervention professional (CIP) navigates educating and guiding family and friends on how to communicate with their loved ones struggling with addictions and/or mental health challenges, with the goal of the individual accepting professional treatment. The Interventionist will guide the entire intervention process, advocating for the family, friends, and the individual struggling with addictions and/or mental health challenges.

Five reasons to hire an Interventionist.

  1. Knowledge and experience are primarily the most important reason for receiving help from an interventionist. People who may struggle with addiction, or may have mental illness issues etc., are typically dealing with a problem that is much stronger to face than they can manage. While many of these people have strong support systems in family and friends, Interventionists draw from a wide range of experiences dealing with various types of individuals and families who suffer from all types of addictions and unmanageable life situations. Seeking council from an experienced Interventionist is highly beneficial. This ideally fast tracks a patient’s recovery, as well as insures their likelihood of success. Although someone may have a strong support system with good intentions, it can be detrimental because of the lack of knowledge and experience from their support system (like the saying goes “I have just enough knowledge on the matter to be dangerous”).
  2. Staging an intervention shows what led to the problem. Because you’re staging an intervention that a professional interventionist is running, they can help you identify the cause of your loved one’s addiction. For instance, many people start drinking or misusing alcohol due to abuse or trauma. However, you may not realize that at first. An interventionist can help you understand the path that led your loved one to engage in substance abuse or behavioral addictions. Then, they can help you put counter measures into place to ensure it doesn’t happen again.
  3. An intervention can prevent loved ones from enabling the person with an addiction. One of the primary reasons that those battling substance abuse continue to use drugs or alcohol is because their family members enable the behaviors. Your family may believe they are helping your loved one by offering food and housing in spite of their addiction. They may also provide funds that are supposed to go to these necessities. However, these actions may be enabling the person to continue using drugs and alcohol. When you stage an intervention however, the entire family is able to recognize the problem and help you set boundaries that will keep everyone safe.
  4. An intervention can prevent conflicts. One of the primary reasons to contact a professional interventionist is that tempers can run high during this stressful time. Staging an intervention tends to bring a significant amount of turmoil and buried pain to the surface. However, for the intervention to be successful, everyone should stay calm and avoid the temptation to place blame on one person or another. An interventionist can ensure that the process will run smoothly and that everyone is able to emerge from the intervention calmly. An interventionist will also help you know what to say and give you the opportunity to encourage your loved one to overcome their substance abuse.
  5. Interventions can end with your loved one getting treatment. With the help of a professional interventionist the intervention you stage will be successful. In the best-case scenarios, your loved one will agree to get treatment. When you reach out to Can-Am interventions, we will provide a range of services to ensure that your loved one gets the care that they need.
