Cannabis, chronic, weed, pot, reefer etc… these are terms that have been used to indicate marijuana in a recreational light. When we think of “reefer” we tend to think of a peaceful and non-harmful way to unwind, or as a casual social activity. These pre-conceived notions are outdated. The marijuana of today is not the marijuana of the 60’s or the 70’s when the potency was about 2% to 5% the THC levels as the marijuana of today. Its not the marijuana of the 80’s or 90’s when THC levels increased from 2% THC to 15% THC. No, today’s marijuana is a very different beast. With THC levels reaching up to 40%, The marijuana of today is barely a shadow of its former self and has mutated into a much more harmful substance. Can-Am Interventions would like to bring awareness to what the new age marijuana user is facing due to the evolution of this drug.
How would you like your marijuana?
Many of us are familiar with marijuana as a drug that can be smoked or ingested. Smoking a joint or using a water bong, or even from making brownies to ingest. These are methods that have been around a long time. But since marijuana has been legal for recreational use in Canada and most of the United States, it has become a commercial product. Commercial products are specifically designed to be attractive to the potential customer. In the time since marijuana has become available in stores, there has been scientific advancements to increase its strength to attract more customers. Here are some examples of different methods of use:
- Vaping is a method in which a very potent and refined version of THC is in a liquid form comparable to honey placed into cartridges to be used in a vaporizer device such as a E-cigarette. The THC levels in this condensed form can reach up to 60%.
- Shatter is another form of Marijuana use that is much like the liquid honey substance used in vaping but is even stronger and is a solid comparable to glass. THC levels have been seen to reach the 80% mark.
- Edibles are not what they use to be. The method of refining the THC is far more superior of that than the brownies we were familiar with from the past. It is a very different and far more intense experience.
- Topical products are now being introduced from a therapeutic standpoint. They are designed to be very potent as to have a maximum effect.
So what’s the problem?
This new-age Marijuana, or THC, is affecting us in far more serious ways than it ever has. We have had enough of a sample size to understand better the effects it is taking on us. Here are some examples of the side effects:
- Paranoia disorders. Using marijuana can likely make the user experience short-term paranoia. But now with this more potent version, we are seeing users develop paranoia disorders that extend beyond the time of use and into daily life away from marijuana use.
- Anxiety disorders. Again, using marijuana can leave the user feeling anxious, this is nothing new. What is new is that users are developing anxiety disorders that become full time issues.
- Depression. Depression rates have increased exponentially since the recent evolvement of marijuana. It is almost certain that ongoing use of marijuana will lead to depression disorder beyond the use of this drug.
- Lack of focus. This would seem obvious to anyone who ever experienced using marijuana. But it’s the new data about this drug that makes this scary. A lack of focus is understandable when high from marijuana but, its when the user is not high but still experiences a difficult time trying to focus on momentary and daily tasks. The lasting effects of poor focus extends days, weeks and even months beyond use.
- Poor self-esteem. Daily marijuana use has been directly linked to self-esteem issues. Again, this is a matter that extends beyond the use of marijuana and into daily life.
- Poor overall mental health. Consistent marijuana use also suppressesmacromolecular synthesis. Which basically means it affects our DNA, the way our brains process proteins which reduce the levels of histone gene expression, which is important for our physical and mental health. Without that proper balance we will quite simply go crazy.
