Mental Health Assessments & Referrals:

At CanAm Interventions, we work in partnership with experts to provide assessments and referrals tailored to mental health diagnoses, encompassing emotional, psychological, and social well-being. These factors significantly impact thoughts, behaviors, and emotions, making mental health crucial at every stage of life, from childhood to adulthood.

Information on Mental Health:

  • Mental health issues are more prevalent than many acknowledge and can present as distress or difficulties in social, work, or family settings.
  • Signs may include deteriorating work performance, compromised communication, challenges with concentration at school, or a general inability to care for oneself.
  • The spectrum of mental illnesses is broad, ranging from depression and anxiety to severe conditions like schizophrenia.
  • Regrettably, numerous individuals suffer from mental health issues without seeking help, which may lead to dire consequences such as unemployment, homelessness, incarceration, or even suicide.
  • Intervention for someone exhibiting signs of a mental health problem is crucial, as it may prompt them to seek professional aid.

Mental Health Disorders

Adult Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD/ADD)

ADHD is a brain disorder characterized by a continuous pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that disrupts functioning or development. Inattention refers to a person's tendency to drift off task, lack persistence, struggle with maintaining focus, and be disorganized, not due to defiance or misunderstanding.

  • Hyperactivity involves constant movement, even in inappropriate situations, or excessive fidgeting, tapping, or talking. In adults, it may manifest as extreme restlessness or exhausting others with continuous activity.
  • Impulsivity is when a person acts hastily in the moment without prior thought, potentially causing harm, or when they seek immediate rewards or cannot delay gratification. An impulsive individual may intrude socially, interrupt others excessively, or make significant decisions without considering long-term repercussions.
Bipolar Disorder

Individuals with bipolar disorder can undergo depressive episodes, hypomanic episodes, manic episodes, and mixed episodes that combine depressive and manic symptoms.

  • Depression is characterized by persistent feelings of hopelessness, guilt, low self-worth, sadness, irritability, or suicidal thoughts lasting two or more weeks. Individuals with depression may experience excessive sleep or insomnia, overeating or poor appetite, and a loss of interest in activities once enjoyed.
  • Psychotic depression occurs when severe depression is accompanied by psychosis, such as delusions or hallucinations with a depressive theme, like beliefs of guilt, poverty, or illness.
  • Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is marked by depression onset during the winter months when natural sunlight is reduced. This type of depression typically resolves in spring and summer. SAD often involves social withdrawal, increased sleep, and weight gain, and it predictably recurs each year.
Anxiety Disorders

It's normal to experience occasional anxiety in life, such as when dealing with work issues, before exams, or while making significant decisions. However, anxiety disorders are more than just transient concerns or fears. In individuals with an anxiety disorder, the feelings of anxiety persist and may intensify over time. Conditions such as generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, and social anxiety disorder are examples of this. These disorders can disrupt daily tasks, including work, education, and personal relationships, and there are various forms of anxiety disorders.

Eating Disorders

Conditions such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, and night eating syndrome are psychiatric disorders that affect food consumption. Individuals with these disorders often engage in harmful rituals related to diet and exercise, including severe calorie restriction, obsessive exercising, nocturnal overeating, or cycles of binging and purging.

  • Anorexia Nervosa: Individuals with anorexia nervosa may perceive themselves as overweight, even when they are critically underweight. They often weigh themselves obsessively, restrict their food intake drastically, and consume very limited types of food. Anorexia nervosa is associated with the highest mortality rate among mental disorders.
  • Binge-Eating Disorder: Individuals with binge-eating disorder experience a loss of control over their eating. Unlike bulimia nervosa, episodes of binge-eating are not accompanied by purging, excessive exercise, or fasting.
Schizoaffective Disorder

Schizoaffective Disorder can be challenging to diagnose due to its combination of schizophrenia symptoms and those of depression or bipolar disorder. It manifests in two primary forms: the bipolar type and the depressive type. The symptoms can be intense and require careful monitoring. The specific symptoms experienced depend on the diagnosed mood disorder, whether depression or bipolar.

Borderline Personality Disorder

Borderline Personality Disorder is a mental health condition characterized by persistent changes in mood, self-perception, and behavior. These symptoms frequently lead to impulsive actions and difficulties in relationships. Individuals with borderline personality disorder might endure intense bouts of anger, depression, and anxiety, which can persist anywhere from a few hours to several days.

Mental Treatment Referrals

Treatment referrals will be determined by individual assessments, followed by recommendations for appropriate levels of care.

  • Inpatient Hospitalization: This rehabilitation level typically follows intensive supervision in a hospital or similar treatment facility.
  • Residential Mental Health Treatment: Ideal for clients needing round-the-clock monitoring, residential treatment offers therapy in a setting that combines the comforts of home with a supportive environment.
  • Partial Hospitalization: This service offers a blend of inpatient structure and supervision with the independence of outpatient care, providing recovery services within a hospital or similar facility.
  • Intensive Outpatient Programs: These programs allow clients to engage in recovery activities during the day and return to their private residence or a transitional housing program at night.
  • Transitional Living/Mental Health Housing Programs: Transitional living facilities offer clients a chance to gradually reintegrate into society.
