Addiction Assessments & Referrals

At CanAm Interventions, we have license professionals that follows the standards of the substance use disorder (SUD), as defined by The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5), is a condition characterized by a pattern of symptoms resulting from the use of a substance which the individual continues to take despite experiencing adverse effects.

The DSM-5 identifies 11 criteria stemming from substance misuse, categorized into four main groups: impaired control, physical dependence, social impairment, and risky use. The severity of an SUD is classified as mild, moderate, or severe and includes:

  • Consuming a substance in larger amounts or over a longer period than intended.
  • Unsuccessful efforts to cut down or control substance use.
  • Strong cravings or urges to use the substance.
  • Developing tolerance, meaning a need for increased amounts of the substance to achieve intoxication or desired effect.
  • Experiencing withdrawal symptoms when the substance use is discontinued.
  • Spending a great deal of time obtaining, using, or recovering from the substance.
  • Failing to fulfill major role obligations at work, school, or home due to substance use.
  • Continuing substance use despite having persistent or recurrent social or interpersonal problems caused or exacerbated by the effects of the substance.
  • Abandoning important social, occupational, or recreational activities because of substance use.
Recurrent substance use in situations where it is physically hazardous.
  • Persistent substance use despite knowledge of having a persistent or recurrent physical or psychological problem likely to have been caused or exacerbated by the substance.

Assessments and Referrals for Behavioral Addictions:

Food Addiction

The question is, do you eat to live or live to eat? While we require nutrition to maintain our health and proper bodily functions, eating also provides a pleasurable experience through the sight, smell, and taste of food. The choices we make about what and how much to eat can influence the brain, which is why some individuals develop an addiction to food.

Gambling Addiction

Many people enjoy the thrill of trying their luck in games of chance. The “rush” associated with the potential to win can be exhilarating. However, when this behavior becomes compulsive and the individual loses control over their desire to continue playing, it becomes a serious addiction.

Sex Addiction

It may not be commonly recognized, but sex is a mind-altering experience. A sex addict is not merely someone with a high sex drive; rather, it’s someone who engages in sexual behaviors to escape reality or chase a “high,” rather than to connect intimately with a partner.

Work Addiction

Many of us grow up learning that hard work is a virtue. In the job market, we aim to demonstrate our reliability and strong work ethic to potential employers. However, when the pursuit of work becomes an obsession, it can lead to work addiction.

Porn Addiction

When a person’s casual interest in pornographic material escalates to consuming a significant portion of their time and energy, it indicates a porn addiction. This can lead to spending hours or even days immersed in pornography, which can negatively impact real-life relationships.

Love Addiction

Contrary to its name, love addiction is not about love. It’s related to the addict’s need to be in a relationship or cling to a chosen individual at any cost. This often leads them to mold themselves into what they believe their partner desires, sometimes tolerating mistreatment and abuse. In extreme cases, some love addicts cannot let go and may resort to stalking.

Treatment Referrals

Referrals for treatment will be based on individual assessments and the subsequent recommendations for various levels of care.

  • Medical detox: Detox services are offered in a variety of settings, including hospitals, inpatient treatment centers, outpatient programs, clinics, and more.
  • Inpatient rehabilitation: This level of rehabilitation, or “rehab,” often follows a period of intensive detox and involves 24-hour medical supervision at a hospital or other treatment facility.
  • Residential treatment: Clients who can benefit from the stability and security of 24-hour monitoring are good candidates for residential treatment. Residential treatment facilities offer therapies in an attractive setting with comfortable, homelike surroundings and a supportive atmosphere.
  • Partial hospitalization: Partial hospitalization services combine the structure and supervision of an inpatient program with more independence, which offer recovery services on an outpatient basis in a hospital or inpatient treatment facility.
  • Intensive outpatient programs: Outpatient treatment, in which the client participates in recovery activities during the day while returning to a private home or transitional housing program.
  • Transitional living/sober housing programs: After rehab, clients may feel more secure in their sobriety if they can live in an atmosphere that supports abstinence from drugs or alcohol. Transitional living homes provide these advantages while giving the client the opportunity to reintegrate into the community.
  • Family treatment programs: An important aspect for families is to attend an independent family program or a family program where their loved one is being treated for addictions or mental health.
