Recovery Community Resources

12-step meeting come in many different forms nowadays, there is not only AA and NA, but now different branches such as Recovery Dharma, SMART Recovery or LifeRing. With the recent Covid-19 pandemic, meetings have been made even more available. With a lot of locations sheltering in place, all a person needed to attend a meeting of any sort was some type of device with internet. All these different types of meetings were aware of their importance to the recovery community and made themselves available through the Zoom platform. This made it possible to attend a meeting in any location from anywhere. Having options like this makes it possible to branch out and find one’s community.

While treatment is a first step in gaining abstinence, attending a group with other likeminded people is very beneficial to maintain one’s sobriety. The power of the group dynamic and having human connection with other people who have similar experiences makes it possible to have a support system, and friendships. Not only that, but when one attends treatment and then goes to a support group their risk for relapse is 50% less than those who do not have a support group.

I know firsthand the importance of the group and meetings. I personally had temporarily moved from my home in the bay area to southern California to attend treatment and then transitional housing. While in this transitional housing I was able to attend both AA and NA and the occasional meditation meeting. I learned that I actually enjoyed going to these meetings, giving me a  safe space to speak about my feelings without judgment. I even met people that became lifelong friends while I was out of my element in a different place. When it came time for me to move out on my own, I returned back to the bay area and got my own apartment. However, I had left my previous support system behind. I knew what I had to do and on my first night alone in my own apartment I looked up an NA meeting  and went by myself. I walked up to the first woman I saw and introduced myself. It was the best thing I could have done for myself because I began to find my community and now years later, I know I am in the right place.
